A 2002 study discovered some chilling facts in regards to priest abuse, Catholic church abuse and clergy abuse cases that occurred in Hawaii. An astounding 5 Hawaiian Catholic priests were removed from duty because of the study as they were accused of sexually abusing minors in their care. Sadly, this is the tip of the iceberg. There are literally thousands of cases of unreported clergy abuse, church sex abuse, and child sex abuse that go unreported in this country each and every year. The Honolulu Archdiocese helped John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York assemble that data that was used in the astonishing report. The report was assembled in an attempt to discover the true depth of the clergy abuse scandal, and probed alleged clergy abuse and child sex abuse incidents committed by priests and church officials all the way back to 1950.
Out of the 530 priests that worked on the islands of Hawaii since that time, less than one percent of the priests have been removed due to alleged clergy abuse or child sex abuse. The problem is, the National average for removal is much higher than one percent. Several other priests have been removed since 2002, thanks largely to this report. So far, at least 5 clergy abuse lawsuits have been filed in Hawaii. Some of the sex abuse victims have said that that the national Catholic sex abuse scandal has caused suppressed memories of clergy abuse to arise.
