Your Son May Already be at Risk.
The Boy Scouts of America is one of the largest youth organization in the United States. As is often the case, every time there is accessibility for adult sex offenders to volunteer for a youth based organization the chances for sexual abuse increase exponentially. Published reports have stated that there have been thousands of sexual abuse cases within the boy scout organization. For various reasons, many people do not want to report these incidents because of the unwanted attention it brings to their child. Unfortunately, sexual abuse affects the child forever and at some point in their life they are forced to deal with the trauma that it causes.
Adult sex offenders often join the Boy Scouts as adult leaders or assistants because it gives them a legitimate reason to access children who look to them for guidance and direction. By volunteering of this job they have plenty of time and opportunity to work closely with young children. They accompany them on sleepovers, camping trips, meetings at the leaders home and they use this time with the children to “groom” them for sexual abuse. In some cases, boy scout leaders have been accused or convicted in one area of town but then they reappear in another city or state. Poor screening of adult volunteers is one of the reasons for the high rate of sexual abuse within the Boy Scout organization. The Boy Scout organization is well aware that this is a problem within the organization.
